Something that comes up regularly in our program is balance and how the body works best when it is in balance. Balance in activities, foods, energy, responsibilities - the list goes on.

For example vitamins and minerals need to be balanced in the body. Having the right ratio is the key to keeping our bodies running optimally. An example of this is most people think that calcium is needed to keep our bones strong and healthy but it's actually calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in the right ratio that is needed. Most minerals in our body need to be balanced with another mineral to ensure they work effectively.

Even healthy foods need to be rotated to stay balanced. We can only eat so much in a day and if we are eating the same things we are missing out on the nutrients of other healthy foods.

Keeping an 80 - 20 rule is also important for keeping balance. Make healthy food choices 80% of the time and keep the other 20% for times when you go out and eat things you might not normally eat. Part of the joy of eating is enjoying the experience of the occasion and the people around us. We might not be able to control the food we have during those times so just absorb the atmosphere and pleasure of being in the company of those we want to spend time with. That will bring such beneficial energy to us. Just enjoy it for what it is!

Balance is making sure you have as much play time (if not more) as work time. Making the time with friends and family count and ensuring you have plans to make it happen.

Balance is making time for yourself so you are the best you can be for you and the ones around us. If you have kids - they are watching and will likely do what you do:)

Balance is telling your spouse, kids, parents and friends what they mean to you.

Balance is seeing the bright side of things but being ok with letting off some steam and venting occasionally.

Summer is a busy time but I hope you are finding the balance you need!
